I’ll be honest, I’m no expert when it comes to green living. You all know that I’m using more natural beauty and home products, and I’m doing a ton of research to really educate myself on how to live a more green life. I learn something new every day! So today I’m sharing with you 5 steps to a greener home. I hope you enjoy reading and implement some of these ideas into your household.
1. Clean with Natural Products
I’ve been implementing more natural products for a few months now and I’ve found some that work and some that fall short. I’ll be doing a blog series in the future where I’ll be talking about my favorites. For now, if you’re interested in switching to more organic and natural cleaners for your home, I highly recommend starting with a good kitchen countertop cleaner. This product will be in close contact to your food, so it’s important to make sure you’re not exposing your food to harmful chemicals.
2. Buy Local
Look for locally grown produce to not only support your community, but to also help reduce transportation and packing needs normally required for mass distribution. While your shopping, don’t forget to bring your reusable shopping bags. I have a few from Trader Joe’s that I use every time I grocery shop! They are massive and fit so much food, which is great because I don’t have to make so many trips out to my car when I get home.
3. Switch to LED Light Bulbs
LED lights do not contain mercury, and they operate at 10 to 20 percent of the power required for incandescent bulbs of similar brightness. They also last for over 100,000 hours, and don’t heat up like incandescent bulbs do. If you haven’t made the switch to LED lights in your home, I highly recommend it.
4. Upgrade Your Appliances
If you have older appliances in your kitchen, they might actually be costing you money. If you can, try to upgrade at least one appliance to an ENERGY STAR version. ENERGY STAR-qualified washing machines and refrigerators are about 20% more energy efficient than standard models, and ENERGY STAR dishwashers use only about 5.8 gallon of water per cycle. You’ll be saving money on electric and water bills!
5. Use Eco-Friendly Batteries
Bryan and I watch a lot of TV. Sometimes we watch a Netflix movie, while other times we catch up on our DVR queue. Right now some of our favorite shows include Secrets and Lies, Empire, Hell’s Kitchen, Scandal (duh!), and American Idol. When it comes to watching TV, we obviously need batteries for our remote controls. I was walking around Walmart this past weekend and saw these new EcoAdvanced batteries from Energizer. It’s Energizer’s longest lasting alkaline battery, and the first on the market to use recycled batteries and materials. I bought the AA batteries, but you can also find them in AAA.
Energizer is hosting a giveaway to celebrate their new battery in which you can win $1,000 in gift cards. So if you’re interested, enter below!
