Let’s be honest. We all know how much I love my dog. I talk about him all the time to my friends and family, so it’s no surprise that he pops up here on the blog a lot. I can’t help it. He’s a huge part of my life. Not a day goes by that I’m not extremely happy and grateful that I have him. He brightens up my bad days, and keeps me company when I’m sick. Today I wanted to tell you all about Pete since I’ve gotten some questions about his breed, where we got him, his favorite things, etc.
Enjoy!
Quick Facts
Name & how you came up with it: My dog’s name is Pete (but you already knew that). I don’t remember how I came up with his name. I would bother my husband constantly that I wanted a puppy, and eventually I started naming him. Pete was the first name I came up with and it just stuck. I would talk about Pete all the time before he even existed!
Gender, color, breed: Male, red, miniature dachshund
Age: Pete was born in May 2014, so he’s 1 year and 5 months old.
Nicknames: Pete, Peter Pan, Bud, Chicken Nugget, Little Man, Bubba, Babushka.
How long have you had your pet?
We’ve had Pete since July 2014. We got him when he was 10 weeks old. You can read all about our travels to get Pete in this post. I drove for nearly 6 hours to get him, and he was well worth it. It was love at first sight! He had the littlest nose and legs. He truly looked like a sausage. He still does!

What are some quirky things about your pet’s personality?
Pete is a ball of energy. I knew going into it that dachshund could be spunky, but Pete is above and beyond! He’s hilarious. When I come home from work, he jumps up on the top of the couch and cries until I tell him to get off (otherwise he’ll squirt on the couch!). If our dog gate isn’t up, he’ll run to the front door and meet me there. I’ll tell ya – nothing is better than having your dog jump up and down to greet you. It’s the sweetest thing in the entire world. He acts like he hasn’t seen me in days.
Another quirky thing about Pete is that he’ll carry his toys with him all around the apartment. If I’m lying on the couch, he’ll jump up and place his toy right on my stomach and sometimes on my face. He’s very persistent.
What are some of your favorite past times with your pet?
As simple as this sounds, one of my favorite things to do with Pete is cuddle. He’s not comfy unless he’s snuggling with me or Bryan. He sleeps in bed with us and is constantly curled up behind my back. He keeps me warm!
I also like taking Pete for walks around our neighborhood and at Valley Forge Park. He’s not the best with meeting new dogs. He’ll bark at them from far away, then start whining as he gets closer to them. Strange little man.
What does your pet eat?
We’ve fed Pete Wellness brand food since the day we brought him home. Wellness food contains real meat, fruit and veggies and has a boost of antioxidants and probiotics. It does not contain any artificial flavors or colors, and has no corn, wheat or soy fillers. The meat is free of added hormones and steroids. We feed him the small breed recipes because they are formulated to meet the unique nutritional needs of smaller dogs of all ages.
Aside from his dog food, Pete also loves bananas, apple chunks, carrots, and pineapple in moderation.
Some food necessities: bowls from Harry Barker and placemat from Target.
What are your pet’s favorite accessories & toys?
You can read all about Pete’s favorite toys in this post, but in general we love to buy the following brands: KONG, Harry Barker, and Boots and Barkley. Boots and Barkley is a Target brand and is really great quality. When he was teething, we used chewing bones from Nylabone.
In terms of clothing and accessories, Pete is pretty low-maintenance. He has a winter jacket from Dox and Dane, a fall fleece from The Cozy Hound, a Puppia harness and a Harry Barker collar. When he was a tiny pup, we bought him the cutest pjs from Martha Stewart, but unfortunately he doesn’t fit into those anymore.
He’s on Instagram
Follow Pete on Instagram, because he’s pretty popular. His username is @hotdogpete, and I’m sad to say he has more followers than me.
