When I decide what area of my home I want to organize next, I take a look at what always leaves clutter. Right now, it’s receipts, my purse, hats/scarves and lunch boxes. I hope to tackle the last few items in the very near future, but today I’m talking about how to organize receipts!
I honestly hate paper receipts. Most stores at this point give the option of an emailed receipt, and I keep those in a folder in my inbox called “receipts”. However, for the stores that are lacking in the technology department, I’ve come up with a solution that’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
First, I picked up an accordion folder from Target. The one I have is from the Up and Up brand which I can’t find on the Target website. However, this is a great alternative. (Target has FREE SHIPPING right now!) The folder comes with lettered tabs, but they aren’t that pretty. The tabs are a bunch of different colors that don’t really match the blue folder. I know I’m crazy, but if something isn’t nice to look at, I’ll never use it. Since receipts were taking over my life, I needed something that was going to work for me.
While I was shopping for the folder, I also made my first washi tape purchase! I know… I’m behind the times. I now understand the addiction to washi tape. The two I picked out are from the Scotch brand.
Making the new tabs was ridiculously easy.
- Remove all ugly colored tabs.
- Flip the tab around so the white side is facing you.
- Cover the white side of the tab with washi tape. Cut off the excess.
- Use a label maker to design new tab labels. I used the Brother PT-1290 label maker that I’m borrowing from my in-laws, but this baby is on my wishlist.
- (If you don’t have transparent label tape) Cut the new tab labels down so the least amount of white label is showing.
- Place the lettered label onto the washi tape tab.
- Slide the new gorgeous tab back into the slits in the folder.
Now you have a gorgeous, unique receipt organizer! Have fun with the washi tape. I only purchased two colors to see if I liked them or not, but you could go crazy and use any color combo you’d like!

I need to start doing this for blogging expenses! I’ve been horrible at keeping track of everything!
I hear ya! 2015 will be my year to get the blog and all it’s finances under control.
