The second place we stayed at in La Jolla was the Empress Hotel. This hotel was a bit further from the beach than the first hotel we stayed at, but it was still just a 15 minute walk to the water. Not too far at all. If you want to get technical, it’s three blocks from the ocean cliffs and five blocks from La Jolla Cove.
The Hotel
When we checked into the hotel, I was excited to see that there were freshly baked chocolate chip and vanilla macadamia cookies in the lobby. After a long day of hiking in Torrey Pines, the cookies were very much appreciated. After dropping off our bags in the room, we walked around the hotel. Although the hotel is in a beach town, it certainly didn’t feel that way. I felt like we were staying in an upscale trendy hotel in downtown San Diego. I loved the decor in the lobby – dark blue walls and gold accents! I also loved that the breakfast room and terrace had lots of natural light and plants. The hotel was newly renovated and you can tell that the designers really paid close attention to detail. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference.
The hotel is located right next to some great shops on Fay Avenue. Our favorites were a little juice bar and a sunglasses shop.
We didn’t have time to check out the hotel’s restaurant, Manhattan of La Jolla, but it received great reviews online. It’s an Italian place with live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The Room
When I walked into our Superior King guest room, I was surprised to see that the hotel staff sent us a bottle of wine and chocolate truffles. Perfect way to start our stay! Our room had a king sized bed, 37″ flat-screen TV, a couch, free high-speed wireless internet, refrigerator, two plush bathrobes, a coffee machine, and standard items like an iron and blowdryer. The bathroom was very modern and had a stunning glass shower.
