Happy Monday, everyone. Anyone else moving a bit slower than usual today after such a long holiday weekend? I know I’m definitely feeling it. Because of that, I’m reminiscing today about our trip to San Diego with a review of The Patio on Goldfinch, a restaurant in the Mission Hills neighborhood. Goldfinch is the second restaurant for owner Gina Champion Cain and chef John Medall. Their first restaurant is in Pacific Beach on Lamont Street. We chose to visit the one on Goldfinch because (1) it was closer to where we were heading for the day and (2) the photos online of the restaurant’s interior looked amazing. 

Bryan and I started our morning at The Patio on Goldfinch with waters and hot tea (for me). I’ll be real, the breakfast menu during the week is a bit limited. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to find something that was vegetarian-friendly. But to my surprise, there were a few options. I wasn’t feeling eggs or yogurt that morning, so I ordered a short stack of original pancakes topped with blueberry compote. The dish had two fairly large pancakes cooked just how I like them – not too overdone, but not gooey inside. The blueberry compote added the perfect sweetness to the pancakes. If flavored pancakes are more your thing, The Patio also offers chocolate or blueberry pancakes, in which the blueberries are inside the batter. 

Bryan ordered the machaca and eggs, which was slow roasted and dried pork shoulder, ranchero sauce, two eggs, cotija cheese and potatoes. He said that although the dish was good, it lacked a bit of “kick.” Everything was sort of just mild. Our waitress recommended that Bryan add a dash of hot sauce, but even still, the dish would have been better with some sliced jalapeños or extra spices. Although we can’t recommend the machaca, The Patio has a variety of other great breakfast options for meat-eaters (according to reviews on Yelp) including the chilaquiles and the breakfast burrito.

The Patio on Goldfinch is a great option for breakfast during the week. The food is really good, it’s not too pricey, and you get large portion sizes. We really enjoyed the open air atmosphere and overall ambiance of the restaurant. We wish we had more time in San Diego to check out their lunch and dinner options. My cousin, Amanda, who lives in Mission Hills loves The Patio’s happy hour and gave it raving reviews.
