Hey, hey. I had another post scheduled for today, but it wasn’t 100% how I wanted it just yet. Perfectionism at it’s finest, ladies and gents. Instead, I think you’ll enjoy this post as you go into the weekend – the wellness books that you’ll want to read ASAP.
I got the idea for this post the other day when I finally decided that I was going to get back into the habit of reading before bed. I’ve noticed over the past few months, that I’ve been spending hours of my time at night on my phone. You know… scrolling aimlessly through Twitter and Instagram, getting pissed about stupid shit on Facebook, and even reading and answering work emails.
Last year, I got into the habit of reading before bed, but somehow recently fell out of that routine. I’d like to start back up again, so I pulled together a list of wellness books that are on my radar to read.
Head Strong by Dave Asprey
The book’s full title is actually Head Strong: The Bulletproof Plan to Activate Untapped Brain Energy to Work Smarter and Think Faster-in Just Two Weeks. Phew. Say that three times fast. If you’re not already familiar with Dave Asprey, he’s basically a wellness mastermind and the brainchild behind Bulletproof Coffee, which I’m still dying to try.
In this book, Dave shares tips on how to biohack your way to a smarter, faster and more resilient brain and how to take your mental performance to the next level. His two-week program includes which foods to eat and which to avoid, how to incorporate the appropriate amount of exercise into your day, meditation and breathing tips, recommended supplements, and much more.
Out of all the books on this list, I’m definitely diving into this one first. I’m constantly trying to find ways to be energized throughout the day, have mental clarity, and basically GET. SHIT. DONE.
Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant
Option B came out just a couple of weeks ago and it’s already a National Best Seller. It’s written by Facebook’s COO and a top rated professor from Wharton. After Sheryl suddenly lost her husband, she felt like she’d never find happiness again. Her friend Adam, who is a psychologist, told her that there are different ways that people bounce back from traumatic events, and that she will eventually find happiness again.
The book goes into detail about Sheryl’s story and her own grief and isolation after her husband’s death, but it also tells the story of many other people who used their resilience to overcome hardships including illness, natural disasters and sexual assault. Option B outlines how to help others in crisis situations, how to develop compassion for ourselves, and how to create resilient families.
The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein
I’ve skimmed through some of Gabrielle’s other books {Spirit Junkie and May Cause Miracles}, and liked what I read, so I figured that her new book was next on my list. The Universe Has Your Back is all about how to transform fear into faith and create happiness, security and clear direction. Gabrielle says, “My commitment with this book is to wake up as many people as possible to their connection to faith and joy. In that connection, we can be guided to our true purpose: to be love and spread love. These words can no longer be cute buzz phrases that we merely post on social media. Rather, these words must be our mission. The happiness, safety, and security we long for lies in our commitment to love.”
Natural Beauty Skin Care by Deborah Burnes
You guys know that I’m all about natural products in all areas of my life, definitely including skin care. A few years back, I made the conscious decision to really look at ingredient labels and make more educated decisions about what I’m putting on my skin. At this point, most of my products {not all} are paraben-free and fragrance-free.
I’m super excited to read this book. It talks about the importance of going all-natural with your skin care routine, but also provides budget-friendly recipes that you can use to make your own skin care essentials like body butters, hair masks, bath bombs, and more.
The Headspace Guide To Meditation And Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe
You’ve heard about Headspace, right? It’s a guided meditation app founded by former Buddhist monk, Andy Puddicomb. Over 5 million people have downloaded it!
Andy’s book goes a bit deeper and provides power meditation techniques that can positively impact all areas of your life – your productivity, your stress, your sleep schedules, your personal relationships… really everything. If you’ve been wanting to get more info about meditation and implement a meditation practice, this book is a good place to start.
Joy On Demand by Chade-Meng Tan
Learning to cultivate joy is the secret to success, at least according to Chade-Meng Tan. Tan writes that anyone can find happiness, you just need to have the tools in place to do so. Tan says, “If you have been unhappy, or you are happy and aspire to be even happier, know that your happiness set point can be upgraded. I know because I did it, I have seen many others do it, and scientific studies have measured it. Of course, Buddhist monks and other contemplative people have been doing it for thousands of years, but it’s not something in the water in the Himalayas, it’s something you can do too, wherever you are.”
If you’ve been in a funk lately, I think you should definitely check out this book!
// Alright, alright. Have a wonderful Friday, my friends. I’ll be downloading a bunch of these books this weekend in hopes to start a nighttime reading routine again. I’ll let you know how it goes. Xo, Nicole
