My Favorite Podcasts for a Long Commute

  /
January 15, 2019

I spend a lot of time in my car commuting to and from work, dropping Vienna off at daycare, running errands, etc. It’s exhausting so I like to listen to podcasts to pass the time. It’s been a few years since I last shared my faves, so I’m excited to do so today! Let’s get into the list…

best podcasts 2019

Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations

I have two podcasts from Oprah on this list, but let’s start with SuperSoul Conversations. Whenever someone asks me for podcast recommendations, I always mention SuperSoul Conversations. I feel like there’s an episode for everyone. Topics range from spirituality and wellness to cooking and business. If I’m feeling uninspired, I’ll turn on an episode. This podcast makes me think, sparks my creativity, and always leaves me with a new idea to try.

Favorite episodes: Panache Desai: Discovering Your Soul Signature; Michael Pollan: Conscious Eating; Jeff Weiner: Leading with Compassion

The Goop Podcast

Truth be told, I’m not the biggest Gwyneth Paltrow fan because I don’t think she’s very relatable. However, The Goop Podcast is definitely worth a listen. I pick and choose which ones I download based on the guest, but overall I find the tips and topics mentioned to be very valuable. One of the first episodes I downloaded was about the “motherhood shift.” The guest talked about how women are treated so well while pregnant, but sort of forgotten once the baby arrives. I kept saying, “YES!” over and over again as I listened.

Favorite episodes: Postpartum Anxiety & the Motherhood Shift; Gwyneth x Chrissy Teigen: On Food, Marriage & Social Media; Gwyneth on Perfectionism, Criticism & Curiosity

Good to be Home

Mika Perry shares amazing tips for organizing your home on her website, so when she launched a podcast with her husband Russ last year, I knew I had to check it out. It doesn’t disappoint! There’s a new episode every Monday and it’s my favorite way to start my work week. Good to be Home is a mix of entrepreneurship, family, marriage, sobriety, and how Mika and Russ balance their business and life. They have a segment at the beginning of each episode in which they share what they are reading, listening, eating and loving. They’ve inspired me to try so many new things and implement new routines in my day.

Favorite episodes: A List of Our Favorite Everyday Essentials; Tips for Home Organization; Developing Great Nighttime Routines

3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms

Don’t have a long commute? If you’re a busy mom looking for a short podcast, definitely check out 3 in 30. Each episode is just 30 minutes and leaves you with 3 doable takeaways to make your family life a little better. Super efficient. I’ve listened to a few parenting podcasts, but 3 in 30 is by far the best one I’ve found.

Favorite episodes: Fighting Against Mom Guilt; How to Create a More Peaceful Home; How to Accomplish Big Projects in Your Spare Moments as a Mom

Oprah’s Master Class

The second podcast from Oprah on my list is her Master Class. This podcast differs from SuperSoul Conversations because it’s not in an interview format. It’s literally a master class when one guest just talks for 45 minutes to an hour all about their life and the lessons they’ve learned. I specifically loved the episode with Simon Cowell because he talked about the early days of American Idol and how they struggled for a network to buy the show! How crazy is that!? I’ve listed my other favorite guests below, but you can also listen to episodes with Stevie Nicks, Jon Bon Jovi, LL Cool J, Kevin Hart, and Jane Fonda … just to name a few.

Favorite episodes: Simon Cowell; Justin Timberlake; Ellen DeGeneres

Slow Burn (Season 2)

The second season of Slow Burn is all about the impeachment of Bill Clinton. I was in middle school when Clinton was president, so I never knew all the ins and outs of the Monica Lewinsky scandal (and all the other scandals) that affected the White House. Each episode draws you in and has you wanting to listen to more. I found it so incredibly fascinating. There were many nights when I sat in my car after arriving home just so I could finish an episode. It’s that good, you guys. Go download it now. I finished the entire season in a week.

Up & Vanished (Season 2)

Each season of Up & Vanished discusses a different case. Most people talk about season 1 (including Bryan!), but I personally loved season 2’s coverage of Kristal Anne Reisinger. You learn all about Kristal’s move to the spiritual, tiny town of Crestone, CO. In July of 2016, Kristal was reported missing after attending a full moon drum circle. Two years later with no arrests, the county sheriff’s office is no longer treating the disappearance as a missing persons case, but rather suspected foul play.

Dr. Death

Dr. Death is one of those true crime podcasts that you ask yourself over and over again, “How can this really be true?!” Well, my friends it is. Even though I knew the overall outcome, I was shocked by the end of each episode. The description of the podcast on iTunes says it best: “We’re at our most vulnerable when we go to our doctors. We trust the person at the other end of that scalpel. We trust the hospital. We trust the system. Christopher Duntsch was a neurosurgeon who radiated confidence. He claimed he was the best in Dallas. But soon his patients started to experience complications, and the system failed to protect them.”
