National Running Day

Happy National Running Day everyone!  National Running Day happens annually on the first Wednesday of June and is a day when runners all across the country can declare their love for the sport.  I started running last August and have since run two 5ks and will be running my first half marathon in November at the Philadelphia Marathon.

I never used to love running.  In the past, the only time I would run was in gym class.  I was super fast with sprinting, but never had the agility or stamina to run long distance (I’m slowly getting better).  My first race was the Race for Hope, a 5K to raise money and awareness for brain tumors,  in memory of my mom.  Ever since I ran that first race and felt the joy of crossing the finish line, I knew I wanted more.  I’ve made it my goal this year to run a half marathon and have the drive to run a full marathon in 2013.

In honor of National Running Day, I will make it a plan to run at least 1 mile today.  Today was going to be my rest day, but I cannot NOT run on running day!

Here are a few ways that you can participate in National Running Day:

  1. Take a quick run on your lunch break with your coworkers.  This one is easy.  Get together a few friends and go for a lunchtime run.  I’m usually really tired in the morning and right after work, so running during lunch would be ideal.  I have to find some people to do it with as well as a safe route.
  2. Sign up for a race in your area.  Signing up for a race is like ripping off the band-aid.  I feel more motivated to work out when I know I have a race coming up.  It’s the training for the specific event that makes me excited to head to the gym!
  3. Donate to a charity to help those with disabilities.  This sort of goes with #2, but another way you can get involved is by donating whatever you want to a charity to help those with disabilities.  Some of my favorites include Autism Speaks and the Special Olympics.

How will you be celebrating National Running Day?

I have a run planned for after work today!

Awesome me too! I’m going to Whole Foods for a beer tasting then coming home to run before dinner.

I’ll be celebrating it by getting my foot checked at the doctor’s. It got stepped on during a soccer game and still hurts a couple weeks later. Fingers crossed it’s not a fracture or anything that lands me in a boot. Womp womp.

Happy national running day, Nicole! I’m thinking of signing up for the Philly half this fall, too! Are you doing Rock N’ Roll?

Hey Courtney! I’m not doing Rock and Roll yet. I’m doing a 5K this weekend, and hope to do a 10K before the half in Nov! What about you/
