I really enjoy combining fitness with amazing charities and organizations. I plan on running the Race for Hope 5K in support of brain cancer again this autumn, but I was looking for another event for the spring/summer. On May 20th, I will be participating in Yoga on the Steps. I saw the event’s Facebook page while stalking browsing through Facebook pages and knew that I had to register. Registration is free, but that shouldn’t stop you from fundraising for breast cancer.

What is Yoga on the Steps?
Yoga on the Steps was developed in 2001 by Jennifer Schelter, MFA. Jennifer had an idea to bring together her passion for yoga with her professional training to benefit others. Jennifer created “Yoga Unites”, a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for people to acknowledge “the power everyone possesses to positively transform their world.” The organization’s first yoga event was on December 2, 2001 to raise awareness for Philadelphia anti-violence.
Courtney Kapp, Jennifer’s close friend, was diagnosed with breast cancer and wanted to use her home as a place where women could come together to do yoga taught by Jennifer. With the help of Jean Sachs, CEO of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Jennifer, Courtney and Jean formed Yoga on the Steps.
Yoga on the Steps is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and has become a way for the women affected with breast cancer to come together using yoga. The events are held in Philadelphia, Denver, and Washington DC.
What can I expect at Yoga on the Steps?
The one-hour yoga class is designed for all individuals! Each class also features music by Yvette Pecoraro and her band. Afterwards, participants can enjoy a light breakfast including organic and natural foods and walk through the Healthy Living Expo. The expo will consist of health and nutrition expert, sponsors, yoga materials, and other specialty vendors.
If you are in the Philadelphia area and are interested in doing this, please let me know and I’d love to meet up!
