Ironman World Championship Documentary on Hulu

Last weekend, I started watching the Ironman documentary on Hulu that Janae spoke about on her blog a few weeks ago.  I got about 20 minutes into the film, when I decided that Bry should watch it with me.  It was THAT good.  Later on that day we finally started the film from the beginning and watched it in its entirety. If you don’t already know an Ironman competition consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles, and then finishing with a 26.2 marathon.  Talk about endurance!  The Ironman is held in Hawaii and has been going on since 1978.

I can’t even imagine actually taking part in an Ironman competition. Well to begin, you need to finish a certain amount of qualifying events to even register. Also, the swim and biking portions of the race have cut off times that need to be completed in order to continue on. The one guy in the film trained like everyone else, but didn’t finish the swim portion in the time allowed. Bummer!

The documentary showed a lot of touching, remarkable stories as well. The photo above is a man who was handicapped from a motocross accident a few years ago. He never gave up hope and trained to do the Ironman. Since he has no feeling in his legs he had to use a bike that was propelled with his arms. Talk about arm strength! I couldn’t help but tear up.

Chrissie Wellington ended up winning the Ironman for the women. I never knew who she was before I watched this, but this girl is a beast. All of her competition knew that she was bound to win and even with a flat tire setting her back a few minutes, she ended up winning!

couldn't even imagine that feeling of accomplishment.

I have never watched any movies about running, but I have seen a lot of inspiring sports movies…Cool Runnings, Center Stage, and one of my all time favorites (that I’m slightly embarrassed to admit)…Blue Crush!
Since I’ve become so obsessed with running this year, I’d love to see this documentary! Thanks for the suggestion!

oh I love Center Stage! as a former dancer & choreographer, that movie always holds a place in my heart.
