Weekend Recap (10/5–10/7)

October 8, 2012

This weekend was very busy!  I don’t mind that though, because Bry and I had so much fun.  The weather cooled down a bit this weekend and today it’s only going into the mid/high 50s.  Perfect weather in my opinion.  Let’s take a look at what I did this weekend.

Friday

Friday night after dinner, Bry and I went to our nearby township building for a Fire Expo.  Bry must have told me about this event 10 times during the past week, but I wasn’t paying attention.  Thus, I had no idea what to expect.  As we turned down the street where the expo was, we realized that it was going to be crowded!  We saw fire trucks, police and rescue vehicles, the Jaws of Life and more.

Saturday

My alarm went off at 3:45 on Saturday morning.  Luckily, I went to bed around 9:30, so I got a bit more sleep than expected.  At 4:30, Bry and I loaded the car and drove the 3 hours to Washington DC.  We had a lot planned for one day: a White House tour, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Holocaust Memorial Museum, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and the Archives.  We did it all!

First, we met his parents at the W hotel for a quick cup of coffee.

From there, we walked over to the White House together for our 8:30 am tour.  The White House was amazing.  We weren’t able to take photos inside, so you’ll just have to believe me.  Some highlights for me were seeing the hallways where the Christmas trees are carried in, the exact place where Obama gives national addresses (the place where he addressed the country after the killing of Osama Bin Laden), and the colored rooms such as the Red Room and the Green Room.

We were starving by the time the tour was over.  We ended up walking back to the hotel and eating breakfast at a steakhouse inside the W hotel.  It was delicious!  I had the best breakfast potatoes in my life there.

After breakfast was over, we left his parents and went on our way to tour the city.  We saw SO many things in such a short amount of time.  We saw the Washington Monument (my favorite).

We then walked through the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool, because for whatever reason the pool was empty!  Bryan was excited to see The Lincoln Memorial.  He had no idea that the statue was so big!

Next on our agenda was the Holocaust Memorial Museum.  I really wanted to see this museum because the last time I was in DC it was closed.  The museum was pretty gruesome, but interesting.  We saw shoes from those who were in the concentration camps, photos of survivors, and even a bunk bed from one of the camps.  It was a chilling experience.

The next place on our agenda was the Smithsonian Art and Space Museum.  To be honest, at this point my feet hurt so bad from my flats that I couldn’t enjoy the museum at all.  All I wanted to do was rush through the museum and get onto the next place.  We did get to touch a rock from the moon and see some really cool jets!

Once we finished looking at moon rocks and jets, we walked over to the Archives.  We had to wait in a decently long line to get into the building, but this is the place that the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence is housed.  We weren’t going home until we saw them.  It was such a great experience once we walked into the building.  It was fairly dark in the section where the documents were because light damages them.  One thing that both Bry and I noticed was that the Declaration had faded quite a bit!  You could barely make out what the text said.

By the end of the day, all I wanted to do was sit in the car and take off my shoes!  Flats were definitely a bad shoe selection for the day, but I didn’t want to wear boots or my running sneakers so it was all I had.  I need to buy some normal sneakers for occasions like these.

Sunday

Sunday was spent shopping, watching TV and relaxing on the couch.  Nothing better than that.

You sure packed a lot of D.C. attractions into a single day. I’m exhausted just thinking about it! The Holocaust Museum is such a powerful educational experience, but it is also emotionally draining. It usually takes me a few days to get out of my funk after visiting it.

Yeah. I agree about the Holocaust Museum. Such a weird feeling leaving the building, but I am glad I saw it. I wanted to visit it for a year or so now.

Even though I’m relatively close to DC, I’ve never been! It’s definitely on my to-visit list though, since there’s so much to do there!

I love DC. I first went sometime in college and I fell in love with the city. There’s definitely nice and not so nice parts, just like any city.

What an awesome trip! I love DC, there’s so much to do! I would love to tour the white house someday! And your outfits are super cute, I love your style!

Aw thanks Erin! I’m wearing the same outfit in all of the photos, LOL 🙂 But thank you! Love those pants. I got them at Gap and I can’t wait to get them in more colors.

I worked the overnights this weekend, but I still managed to make it out for a training run with a buddy — we ended up running just short of half-marathon distance at a pace that allowed for us to chat (12.7 miles in 1:39). It really, really feels great to just be able to knock off a half-marathon on a lazy Sunday afternoon having only gotten 3 1/2 hours sleep. And running with her on such a beautiful fall day with no care of pace or distance really reminded me of exactly why I love to run. 🙂
I’ve never been to DC or to the White House, but I would really love to visit someday. There are just so many great sights and so much history!! Everywhere you went/saw sounds super exciting! What was your favourite? Other than the WH, because I think that’s a given. 🙂

Good for you! That’s amazing! I hope to get in a lot more runs this week than in previous weeks. Been slacking lately, and with my crazy busy work schedule I have to make sure I get my runs in on nights when I don’t have mtgs.

I can definitely relate to work getting in the way of workouts. It sucks having to take time away from what you “want” to do from what you “have” to do. But from the sounds of it, you’re enjoying your new job, so at least you have that! I know you’ll find the perfect balance for you. 🙂
