Effects of AI

With the rise of AI over the last year, written form digital content has become increasingly popular again. Companies can now use AI platforms like ChatGPT to churn out everything from homepage copy to blog posts, all with SEO in mind to rank higher on Google. With the right prompt, you can get an article written about the topic of your choosing, in the tone of your choosing, all with just a few clicks. It’s mind boggling really.

I work in Content Marketing full-time and have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in terms of AI-generated content. While I see the benefits (time saving for one), I also see many negatives for consumers. AI-powered tools can make writing sound unnatural and without emotion.

For example, I was searching recently for the best places to take my daughter in NYC during the winter. I came across an article written in list style with locations all over the city appropriate for a six-year-old. The article was void of anyone’s personal tidbits or actual experience visiting these places. I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking for advice on the internet, I want a bit more. Don’t just tell me that the American Girl Doll Store is a good place to go. Tell me why. Tell me what you did on your visit that made it special. Give me the details.

So where does this leave the world of blogging?

As someone who has created editorial content online for almost 15 years, my opinion has never wavered… community is key if you want repeat readers or customers. Humans innately like to feel connected.

Think of all the content creators you enjoy following. You probably follow these people because they make you feel something. They either are relatable, inspire you, motivate you, provide humor/entertainment, or maybe even a few of these things. Point is, people like following people. When you take it a step further, you may even feel like part of their community. They speak or write in a way that creates a sense of familiarity and inclusion.

So do I think AI has a place in content creation? My opinion on the matter doesn’t really matter, because AI is here to stay. But personally, I think it depends how it’s used. If you’re using AI to help inform topics, sure. If you’re using AI to create ALL of your content, no.

We’ll see how content pans out in the next few years, but rest assured that the articles you read here will be from my heart. I write because I love it and it brings me so much joy. Thank you to all of you who have read for many years and continue to support this outlet of mine.
